As of 1 November 2014, the Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism mandated that all aftermarket brake friction parts (including brake pads and brake shoes) must comply with either the UNECE Regulation R90 (E‑mark) or Malaysian Standard MS 1164.
These standards require aftermarket parts to deliver minimum performance within 15% of the original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) products. and all of these brake pads must have certification by SIRIM. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors must submit parts to SIRIM for testing and certification before products become legally sellable in Malaysia.

Brake pads and brake shoes are categorized as regulated automotive components. They require a Component Type Approval (CTA) under Malaysian regulations, tied to UN R90 or MS 1164 compliance. Without CTA clearance, the parts cannot be legally marketed or installed on vehicles on Malaysian roads.
